	In this iteration of The Permian Recordings, the installation adapts Co-Lab’s unique outdoor exhibition space, turning the gallery’s concrete culvert into an enormous infrasonic subwoofer, a speaker at the scale of architecture.&#38;nbsp;

The Permian Recordings are subterranean audio recordings from the Permian Basin, a section of West Texas known for oil and gas extraction near the towns of Midland and Odessa.

	Volcanic Drift presents the subterranean sounds of Yellowstone’s super caldera, cut into vinyl records, and played back through a pair of custom-built subwoofers. Because a portion of this audio extends below the range of human hearing (the infrasonic), these recordings are felt as well as heard.

Using subterranean microphones, Peters has been continuously recording Akashi’s property since May 2025, capturing the sounds of demolition and nearby rebuilding in the wake of the devastating Eaton Fire. Presented here for the first time as a three-hour durational soundscape, these field recordings focus on the debris removal and excavation that took place where you are standing. Played through large-scale subwoofers constructed by Peters, the work unfolds across the ground and through low-frequency sound, using the site as a physical surface and a field of resonance.
Following the soundscape, each day concluded with a music performance by artists with ties to the neighborhood: Celia Hollander on Saturday, May 23 and Paul McCarthy,&#38;nbsp;Alex Stevens, and John Wiese on Sunday, May 24. 
Visitors were invited to wander through the lot to experience a community garden and new sculptural interventions by Akashi, using materials such as tree branches, glass, bricks, and tiles sourced primarily from her property following the fire. Among the works was Witness (Altadena), the artist’s still-standing chimney from her original home, now presented as a sculpture. Taken together, Field Set demonstrates how artists, organizations, and communities can transform individual fragments into a resilient whole through collaboration.

Large-scale subwoofers constructed by Peters amplify low-frequency sounds, creating a field of resonance between Akashi’s sculpture, Monument (Altadena), and the place it honors. The resulting soundscape is physical as well as sonic, offering an embodied way to contend with widespread destruction and its aftermath. Additional performances by artists who have been directly impacted by fires in both Los Angeles and New York took place over the course of the weekend.

Kelly Akashi’s Monument (Altadena)
Monument (Altadena) stands as a testament to the widespread losses suffered in Altadena, California, in the Eaton Fire in January 2025. After Kelly Akashi’s home and studio burned, the chimney was the only structure left standing. She worked with a mason to rebuild it piece by piece, alongside a reconstruction of her home’s walkway, in luminous glass brick.

PerformancesTara WaltersWalters creates atmospheric music that explores memory, nature, and transformation. In the aftermath of the Los Angeles fires, which destroyed her home, Walters returned to search through the rubble and discovered her sound bowl still intact. The bowl had been transformed by the fire, its surface bleached to a pale, smoke-blushed color, with ash and debris fused into the crystal. Even its tone had changed, shifting from an E to an A. As part of her electronic and acoustic performance, Walters will play the sound bowl and offer a trance mediumship transmission focused on how we move forward through times of loss, change, and renewal.

Kyle Luntz, Simona Prives, and Ryan Vahey
Void is a live performance by Luntz, Prives, and Vahey created in response to the loss of their collaborative work Behind the Sky, an immersive installation that was destroyed by a fire in Red Hook, Brooklyn in September 2025. The improvisational work follows the arc of the fire: an initial emergence and accumulation, a sudden destructive event, and the profound absence that follows. Fragments of the original composition are reintroduced through live instruments and archival samples, transformed by analog tape degradation and convolution reverb generated from the impulse responses of cavernous spaces. Rather than reconstructing what was lost, Void inhabits its aftermath, exploring absence and memory, destruction and persistence.

The Storm is a large-scale sound installation that transforms Canary Test into a resonant instrument, immersing visitors in the deep, infrasonic frequencies of Hurricane Hilary, a once-in-a-century storm that struck Southern California in 2023.The Storm centers on Phil Peters' artist-built sound system that is capable of reproducing frequencies as low as 10Hz. Spanning the full length of the gallery, the installation reinterprets geophonic recordings from Mt. San Gorgonio into a complete sensory experience that captures the force of Hurricane Hilary above and the tremors from the San Andreas Fault below. The piece invites visitors to stand, sit, and lie on massive infra-subs, feeling the storm’s sonic waves through physical vibrations. This shift in scale and perception destabilizes human-centered narratives, amplifying the unsettling realities of our current epoch.

Through Peters’ innovative use of sound and space, The Storm critiques institutional norms and explores how art can serve as a conduit for new ways of understanding the interconnectedness of human and environmental systems. Edited to play in varying and unpredictable cycles, the storm recording becomes a contemplation on our fundamental experience of climate change, sublimating into a metaphor for transformation, change, and loss. This work invites us to feel, listen, and reflect on the imperceptible yet powerful forces shaping our world, sparking a reconsideration of our relationship with nature and the systems we inhabit.
